Introduction

American Visa by Juan de Recacoechea is about the quest of a man Mario Alvarez out to get for himself an American Visa with documents that are less-than-legitimate. Set in the Andean heights of La Paz, the book charts Mario’s tumultuous visit which quickly evolves from an-innocuous visa application to a crime-triller tragic comedy.

The narration makes for an entertaining read with well-built backdrop of Bolivia in the 1980s, full of fascinating characters (even if the presence of some stretch plausibility). All in all, an undemanding, engaging read.
