Introduction
The Conscript by Gebreyesus Hailu is a crisp single-sitting reading of the colonial exploitations of the Eritreans by their Italian overlords.
Understandably grim, it is written with a lot of pathos for a short piece of work – but the pathos comes more from the story rather than the writing.
